The City of Fort Lauderdale is planning to implement a new free-flow parking system at the Performing Arts Center Garage in January 2024. The system removes the need to pay at the entrance and replaces it with an extended time to pay at the pay station or by mobile app.
A free-flow parking system offers several benefits for both parking facility operators and users. This type of system is designed to minimize congestion and streamline the parking process, making it more efficient and convenient. Here are some of the key benefits:
- Reduced Congestion: Free-flow parking systems eliminate the need for drivers to search for available parking spaces manually. This reduces traffic congestion in and around the parking facility, which can improve overall traffic flow and reduce the environmental impact of idling cars.
- Time Savings: Users save time by not having to drive up and down rows of parking spaces searching for an open spot. They can enter the parking facility and easily find an available space, reducing the time spent looking for parking.
- Improved User Experience: Free-flow systems enhance the overall user experience by making parking more convenient and stress-free. Drivers can quickly locate an available spot, park their vehicles, and proceed to their destinations without delays.
- Increased Efficiency: Parking facilities with free-flow systems typically have higher turnover rates, as vehicles enter and exit more efficiently. This can lead to increased revenue for parking operators, as more cars can use the facility in a given time period.
- Reduced Environmental Impact: By reducing the time spent idling in search of parking spaces, free-flow systems can help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions associated with vehicle exhaust.
- Flexible Payment Options: Many free-flow systems offer various payment options, including mobile apps, contactless payments, and pay-by-plate options. This flexibility makes it easier for users to pay for parking and reduces the reliance on traditional ticket-based systems.
- Reduced Operating Costs: While the initial investment in a free-flow parking system can be significant, it may lead to reduced operating costs over time. For example, fewer attendants may be needed, and maintenance costs may be lower due to less wear and tear on the facility.
