The Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) continues to implement significant crime fighting technology throughout the City of Fort Lauderdale. Automated license plate reader (LPR) technology is being utilized by law enforcement agencies all over the country to detect, identify, and recover stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and missing or endangered persons. The information collected is critical to public safety and is used in a manner that is strictly in accordance with Florida State Statute in order to fulfill criminal investigative needs.
The police department has deployed approximately 130 LPRs citywide along main thoroughfares, well trafficked public spaces, and residential areas. Each camera may be monitored in the county’s Real Time Crime Center and in FLPD’s Operations Center and may be used in critical incidents for real time information gathering.
FLPD’s Criminal Investigations Division continues evaluating the success of this technology and is proactively seeking interest and partnership with Fort Lauderdale’s residential and business community to deploy additional LPRs.
