Smart Water Meter Program FAQs

General Information

What is the Smart Water Meter Program?

The City of Fort Lauderdale is upgrading all water meters to smart meters. These devices automatically track your water usage multiple times daily, allowing the City to remotely read the meter and provide you with up-to-date information about your water consumption.

How do the smart meters work?

Smart water meters are advanced devices that measure and communicate water usage through a battery-powered radio-frequency (RF) transmitter. These readings are collected in Fort Lauderdale’s smart water meter database and used for billing, leak detection and customer access through an online portal.

Smart meters use radio frequencies (RF) similar to those found in cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth devices, and baby monitors. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved these frequencies for safety. More information on RF safety is available at: FCC RF Safety.

What is AMI?

AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure, a system that enables smart meters to transmit water usage data in near real-time. This technology enhances accuracy, efficiency and customer control over water consumption.

Benefits & Features

What are the benefits of smart water meters?

  • Leak detection – Customers can receive notifications about potential leaks.
  • Better water management – Monitor your own usage rather than waiting for a bill to see consumption.
  • Convenience – View near real-time data through an online customer portal.

How can I save money using smart metering?

  • Smart meters track your water usage in near real-time, helping you detect leaks early.
  • You can set up personalized alerts for high water usage and adjust consumption habits accordingly.

Will I be notified before installation?

Yes, the City will send communications a few weeks before your scheduled installation.

Is the City of Fort Lauderdale doing the installations?

The City has contracted Envocore to install the meters. Envocore technicians will wear uniforms with their company logo and carry proper identification.

Do I have to be present during the installation?

No, you do not need to be home. However, please ensure your water meter is accessible and that pets are secured.

Is there a cost for installation?

No, there is no cost to residents for the installation of smart meters.

Do I have to participate in this program?

Yes, the smart meter installation is required for all City of Fort Lauderdale water customers.

What happens after my new smart water meter is installed?

A door hanger will be left at your property to notify you that your new water meter has been installed.

As part of the installation process, some debris may enter your property's water pipes. Installers will flush the pipes by running any accessible spigot/hose for a few minutes after the installation is complete. Neighbors are encouraged to run the water in a large faucet, such as a bathtub or shower, for approximately one minute to flush any remaining debris out of the pipes. Note that is only a precaution and is best accomplished through a large faucet like the shower or tub, not one with a strainer like the kitchen sink.
