Strategic Plan Goal

The City's Press Play Fort Lauderdale 2029 Strategic Plan articulates Public Safety as a focus area for the next five years with the goal to build a beautiful and welcoming community.

The City is committed to creating a beautiful community that is welcoming to all. As implementation of the $200 million voter-approved parks bond continues, new green spaces and parks will be added, and existing parks and facilities will be revived to provide offerings for all. These spaces will attract visitors while also creating a sense of place for neighbors. Efforts to improve the maintenance, cleanliness, and appearance of public facilities, parks, green spaces, and landscapes will continue providing for a positive and recognizable Fort Lauderdale image. Additionally, work toward a new state of the art City Hall will commence. As the central public location for city government, this facility will be well suited for the needs of neighbors, elected officials, and City staff.

FY 2026 City Commission Priority

This goal was further emphasized with the selection of Public Spaces and Community Initiatives and Public Enjoyment of Waterways as priorities for FY 2026 during the City Commission's Annual Prioritization Workshop on January 19, 2024. The focus of these priorities are to enhance the City public spaces such as medians, increase historic preservation, address broadband connectivity, and support education efforts.

Public Spaces and Cultural Initiatives

Key Themes for FY 2026 include:

  • Improve the beauty, aesthetics, and maintenance of the City (e.g., along roadways, medians, landscaping)
  • Enhance space under bridges to create safe and welcoming community gathering places (e.g., benches, public art, lighting)
  • Advance Parks Bond projects • Create and implement plans for future parks (e.g., Tequesta Park, Lockhart Park)
  • Identify opportunities to create additional green space
  • Centralize the arts and cultural efforts of the City and revisit the public arts ordinance
  • Advance the planning for a new City Hall including finalizing site selection (i.e., the existing site, the site adjacent to the public safety headquarters)

Public Enjoyment of Waterways

Key Themes for FY 2026 include:

  • Partner with neighborhoods and the State to address appropriate locations for mooring
  • Enhance canal cleaning efforts
  • Enhance efforts to ensure appropriate pumpout practices for visiting vessels
  • Continue waterway quality testing and public communication
  • Consider pollution source tracing to inform future action plans
  • Review ordinances and enforcement actions for recreational waterway activities
